8 Things to do in Belgrade Serbia

    Belgrade

If you are in Belgrade Serbia just for one day, these are the MUST do and see items.

Pro – Tip, its hard to experience this wonderful, former Yugoslavian capital in only a few days, so go ahead and extend your trip, you will love Serbia.

    1) Beldrade Fortrest. ( Београдска тврђава )

Belgrade is strategically positioned on the river Danube (Most important river in Europe) and where a new river forms the “Sava”. The Belgrade Fortress overlooks these rivers and is an amazingly preserved set of walls and castle like structures from the first century, built in 279 BCE. Pro Tip, many people gather here to enjoy the outdoors, and there are great views and places to sit along the river. Bring some drinks or snacks, for a great afternoon.

    2) Old Town Belgrade

Belgrade has a modern industrial area for many new businesses, but my favorite area is the old town. Head down Kneza Mihaila Street, (Кнеза Михаила) and walk from there to Skadarlija (Скадарлија) See the old town roads and little shops and restaurants. Its hard to find a better old city centre in Central Europe!

    3) Church of St Sava

This beautiful Orthodox church is the second-largest Orthodox church in the world and was constructed in 1935. Make sure you see the wonderful inside! Of course the church is named after the famous “Svetie Sava”, a Serbian prince and monk, and prolific teacher. Few people have helped forge Serbias history more than Sava. The Church was actually built where Sava’s remains were burned during the Ottoman revolution in 1594, a very historic location.

    4. Nikolae Tesla Museum.

This is a fun interactive museum, and worth a visit. Learn about Tesla, his inventions, and let your creativity grow at this exciting site.

    5. Splavas. ( сплав)

IYKYK Splavas are unlike any other type of Restaurant Bar and Club that you could imagine and a real staple part of Belgrade. Imagine a small Club, that can host music concerts, events, dances, and entertainment, that is also a bar and restaurant and all that is on a building that is floating on the Daunue river! Then imagine 30-40 of these… That’s Belgrade’s splavs. You really can’t experience Belgrade without seeing these. Each one is a little different so check out a few.

    6 Museum of Yugoslav History.

I did a tour here once, and really enjoyed the history, artifacts, and all the info. If it’s your first time to former Yugolsvaia areas, they have a great video about Tito to help get you caught up. Belgrade was arguably one of the biggest cities and the actual capital of Yugoslavia so this is worth seeing.

    7 Avala Tower

For a beautiful view and the highest tower in the Balkans, see this TV communications town. For a small price, you can ride up to the top. Originally built in 1965, and then remade in 2010 after the Nato bombing… this is a great view. Bring your camera!

    8 Hotel Moskva

This is one of the most beautiful hotels, right on the corner of Balkanska. You can see the elegance from the outside, and walking inside you are sure to be impressed. Try Restaurant Tchaikovsky for amazing dishes from Belgrade’s rich history. Just have a few minutes, they also have an amazing Café and Pastry shop, try a Moscow Shnit cake 🙂
